Phonics GamesGive each student a grapheme card.
The students all sit in a circle with their grapheme card in front of them on the floor. Go around the circle once and have each student identify their phoneme (that is, the sound the letters on the card make).
The teacher randomly calls out a phoneme, and the student with that card must quickly stand up. Other students in the class try to point to the correct card before that player stands up. You will need a grapheme card for each student, and a range of objects on the floor whose names begin with those graphemes.
Students sit in a circle. You go through all of the objects and identify their initial sounds, putting them in the middle of the circle.
Put all of the grapheme cards into a box and pass it around the circle ala Pas the parcel. You can play a song, or sing "Box of sounds, pass it round" (to the tune of 'London bridge is falling down'). When the song stops, the child holding the box must take a card out of the box and place it with the corresponding object. This is the polar opposite to another game in the database. You will need a grapheme card for each student, and an object that begins with each one of the cards.
Put all of the objects in a bag, without discussing them. With the students sitting in a circle, go through the grapheme cards one by one, identifying their sounds and putting them in the middle of the circle.
Pass the bag of objects around the room ala Pass the Parcel. Play some music or sing the song 'Bag of objects, pass it round' (to the tune of 'london bridge is falling down').
When the music stops, the student holding the bag muist extract an object and pair it with the corresponding grapheme card on the floor. Divide the class into 2 groups, and assign each a colour. On the board, draw a naughts and crosses (tic tac toe) board and write a grapheme in each square.
One student from the first team calls out a phoneme, and another student in their group calls out a word starting with that sound.
The teacher rubs out that grapheme and draws in a smiley face in a colour that indicates that team.
The teams alternate turns like this until one team wins 3 in a row. Place grapheme cards in a large circle, at least one card per student.
The students walk around the circle, standing at one card at a time and stepping to the next. You can have them sing something like "Walk around and find a sound, what will I stop one?" (to the tune of London Bridge is Falling Down, possibly)
When they stop, each student should be standing on or at a card. Going around the circle, each in turn jumps back off the card and calls out the phoneme (sound) Hold up a grapheme card and, starting with the teacher, everyone has to think up a word starting with that sound. Children sit in a circle, and a box of grapheme cards is passed around ala Pass the Parcel. When the music (or singing) stops, the student holding the box pulls out one of the cards, reads out the sound and finds something in the room beginning with that sound. With the students sitting in a horseshoe shape, pull out grapheme cards form a box and identify them as a group. Theere should be two identical groups of cards in the box, and each group has about 5-8 cards.
The students, in turn, turn over three cards trying to make a pair. Each time a card is turned over, they express the sound on the card. If they make a pair, the matched cards sit in front of the child. |
