Students use toothpicks to make their words.
All of your spelling words are put into a box or container of some kind. Sitting in a circle, play music as the box is passed from person to person. When the music is stopped, the person who is holding the box must pull out a word and read it. If they can't read it they go out. Keep playing until there is one person left.

Harder version: The student must pick out a word without showing it to anyone, read it out and ask the next person to spell it, who goes out if they can't.
Acquire a lot of letter pieces from old scrabble games, and use them to make spelling words. Add up the numbers to find the 'value' of each word.
Write all of the words on different colour sheets of paper. Cut them apart in a variety of ways, so that the pieces go together to form the original words. If you like, arrange it so there is one 'piece' for each student, who must find his partner(s) to finish the puzzle.

Instead of having your flashcards made of boring old slips of paper, write each word on a misshapen chunk of wood offcut.

Have students arrange their words in order of difficulty. Write the easiest word once, the second easiest word twice and so on, creating a pyramid so that the hardest word gets repeated the most.

If you have a 4 letter spelling word, create a sudoku puzzle using the letters as elements in the puzzle. Students finish the puzzle, then draw a line from letter to letter to spell out the word.
If you have access to a squillion little Lima beans or similar, have students construct their words with them. Glue them in place for a future tactile spelling experience.
